Gemini is free to use, but “Gemini 3.1 Pro free unlimited” is not a promise Google makes. Free accounts are moving to Auto routing, rather than guaranteed manual Pro selection. For a specific version, Gemini 3.1 Pro on aiwith.chat is another option, subject to aiwith's own plan and usage limits.

Checked October 13, 2026. Google's model-access change notice says the rollout for free personal accounts began October 9:

Auto sends most prompts to Flash-Lite; harder requests may reach Flash or Pro.
Disabling smart selection makes every response use Flash-Lite.
After the change, AI Plus has Flash-Lite and Flash, while AI Pro and AI Ultra retain Pro. AI Plus customers receive their effective date by email.

Google's two help pages currently disagree: its general limits page still marks all three models as available on every plan. Check your account's picker and any rollout email before subscribing. Auto access should not be read as a guarantee that you can select Pro yourself, or that the app will use a particular Pro version.

Is Gemini 3.1 Pro actually free?

It depends which door you walk through. The Gemini Developer API pricing table lists no free input or output tier for Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview. API billing and access through Google AI Studio are separate from the consumer app; do not assume an app subscription includes API usage.

For the consumer app, use the October update above rather than older instructions telling every free user to select Gemini 3.1 Pro. Google's change notice names the model family “Pro,” not a guaranteed version number.

Why "unlimited" doesn't hold up

Google's current limits documentation describes a compute allowance that refreshes every five hours within a weekly ceiling. Prompt complexity, model, features and conversation length affect consumption, so there is no universal free message count in that table.

The published allowances are standard for free accounts, twice standard for AI Plus, four times standard for AI Pro, and five or twenty times AI Pro's allowance for AI Ultra, depending on the subscription. Ultra's multiplier is not relative to the free baseline.

You can inspect usage in Gemini under Settings → Usage Limits. Google also provides warnings and a refresh notification. This corrects our older claim that you could not check usage before reaching the limit. Free access still has limits; it is not unlimited Pro chat.
