Claude Fable 5.1 vs Claude Fable 5: What Actually Changed?

What's new

Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1, 2026, positioning them as its most capable models for coding and knowledge work. Fable 5.1 is available today in the Claude web app, in Claude Code and on the Anthropic API. Mythos 5.1 is a different story: it's only open to participants in Project Glasswing — vetted cybersecurity and life-sciences organisations — so ordinary users and developers can't get to it.

The performance jump on Fable 5.1 is concentrated in agentic work. On Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1 it goes from Fable 5's 24.7% to 52.6% — more than double. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 it moves from 42.0% to 55.8%. On price, Fable 5.1 is typically about 25% cheaper than Fable 5, and because cache reads were cut by 75%, complex agent tasks that resend a big context every turn can come out up to 45% cheaper overall.

The two models share the same underlying base; what differs is the safety envelope. Fable 5.1 is generally available, Mythos 5.1 is tightly restricted. Read as a whole, the release is a direct response to the criticism Anthropic has been taking on pricing, data retention and over-cautious refusals.

Claude Fable 5.1 is already live on AIWITH.CHAT — no waiting on API access. Open the Claude robot and pick Fable 5.1 from the version dropdown; Opus 5, Opus 4.8, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are there too if you want to compare generations on the same prompt. It shares one $9.9/month plan with GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 3.1 Pro, DeepSeek V4.1 and Kimi K3.

(Mythos 5.1 is not available anywhere outside Project Glasswing, including here.)

Is it worth switching?

If you use Fable 5 for coding or research-style agent tasks: yes, upgrade. Benchmarks nearly doubled while the price fell 25–45% — that's the rare release that is both faster and cheaper, with no trade-off to weigh. If you use Claude Code, you're likely already on it.

If you mostly do light chat and summarisation: you'll feel much less of the benchmark gain, and there's no reason to rush. Switch whenever your billing cycle makes it convenient.

Mythos 5.1 should not factor into your decision at all. Most people will never be able to try it; it's a restricted-industry variant, not a consumer upgrade path.

For a head-to-head against OpenAI's newest flagship, see GPT-6 Astra vs Claude Fable 5 for coding — measured in each model's own harness, the two come out dead level.
